Think occupational therapy (OT) and you might imagine someone recovering from an injury with exercises and stretches. But OT’s reach extends far beyond traditional physical therapy. For seniors, it’s a key to maintaining as much independence as possible and a fulfilling quality of life. This blog post dives into the benefits of OT for seniors, and how Kendyl Zimmer, an occupational therapist from EmpowerMe Wellness, helps our residents at Bozeman Lodge, an Independent and Assisted Living community in Bozeman, Montana, reach their full potential.

Empowering Seniors to Live Well Through Occupational Therapy

Unique Approach to Senior Care

Therapy sessions with the team at EmpowerMe Wellness bring occupational therapy directly to our residents, allowing therapy in their apartments or the onsite therapy office.

“This proximity also allows us to foster strong relationships with residents, facilitating the therapeutic process,” says Kendyl.

OT differs from physical therapy by focusing on the “occupations” that fill a senior’s day, like dressing, bathing, or hobbies. Therapists help residents improve the skills needed to perform these activities safely and independently.

OT sessions are tailored to individual needs. One session may focus on safe showering techniques, while another could involve a fun game of bowling to improve balance.

“The variety of things we work on is part of what makes OT fun and engaging!” says Kendyl. This variety ensures residents stay motivated and see results.

Understanding Individual Needs

Our in-house therapists take the time to understand each resident’s unique needs and preferences. They build rapport, identify what matters most, and create a personalized treatment plan. As Kendyl emphasizes, “We take the time to build rapport with our residents, understanding who they are and what is important to them. We ask them what they need to do and want to do in order to live a healthy, fulfilling life.”

This resident-centered approach extends to daily living activities (ADLs), such as bathing, dressing, and toileting. Through therapy, residents learn movement modifications, improve balance, and increase range of motion. Ultimately, OT empowers seniors to manage these tasks with greater confidence and autonomy.

Specialized Care for Dementia and Parkinson’s

EmpowerMe Wellness offers specialized programs for seniors with dementia or Parkinson’s using creative strategies to promote daily routines and safety. Therapy approaches adapt as the disease progresses, focusing on safety and independence, when possible, and shifting focus to caregiver education in later stages.

Measuring Success

Progress isn’t left to chance. Therapists use standardized assessments to measure cognitive skills, balance, self-care ability, and other functional areas. This data, along with collaboration with residents and caregivers, guides goal setting and tracks progress throughout treatment.

The impact of OT is undeniable. In her time working with seniors, Kendyl shared that she has seen incredible transformations, from managing incontinence to regaining showering and dressing independence. These advancements empower seniors to live more fulfilling lives, often with a boost in mental well-being as they reengage in meaningful activities.

“I have helped residents with incontinence, allowing them to make the switch from briefs and/or pads to wearing standard underwear. I have helped many residents improve their independence and safety with showering, getting dressed, and walking around their apartment,” Kendyl shares with pride.
